Crystalis (2024) was commissioned by Jeff Hastings, head director of the Altus High School Band. Jeff was my percussion teacher while I was a student in the Altus High School Band. Being in the high school band inspired me to pursue a career in music and education. I am thankful and honored to write Crystalis for his students.

The word Crystalis is a combination of “chrysalis” and “crystal”. When combining these two words, I am reminded of Quartz Mountain, one of my favorite childhood haunts. “Chrysalis” refers to transition and transformation.

Crystals form in nature when molecules that are alike get close to each other and stick together. I like to attribute each of my own transformations throughout life to the people around me and the environments I have been in.
